53% of people who have been declared “fit to work” when applying for disability benefits are having their decisions overturned at appeal. The majority of decisions brought before the appeals panel which are overseen by a judge and a doctor are now judged to be wrong. The whole work capability assessment system needs to be overhauled as people are facing severe hardship as a result of wrong decisions especially following last weeks revelation that thousands of people have died soon after being declared fit to work.

In June the British Psychological Society said there was ” now a significant body of evidence that the WCA is failing to assess people’s fitness for work accurately and appropriately”. It called for a full overhaul of the way tests are carried out.
