I was shocked to read in my local paper that the Legoland attraction at the Trafford Centre, Manchester has decided to ban learning disabled adults unless they are accompanied by children. Their excuse for this seems to be that learning disabled adults pose a safeguarding risk to children!

There have been two recent incidents at the centre. In the first a young man of 20 who has Williams Syndrome was turned away from the attraction when he visited with his carer, being told by the staff that the attraction operates a “no entry without children” policy. In the second case a 40 year old man with autism who has an annual pass for Legoland has been told that his pass will not be renewed.

To use safeguarding as an excuse to discriminate against the learning disabled is quite frankly shameful, we are supposed to live in an inclusive society yet small minded acts of discrimination like this show that we have not moved forward at all.
