In April 2012, journalist Damon Rose wrote an interesting news piece for BBC News (Entertainment & Arts) citing several programmes on BBC and other channels, which were making disability ‘more visible’, and asking “Is this the year of disability on TV?”.
At the time, Lousis Theroux’s documentary on young adults with autism in the USA was about to be screened.
The news item is still available here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17842195.
The story has recently been updated, in the light of other programmes broadcast since April, and in anticipation of coverage of the London Paralympics.
Rescare would also like to bring to your attention a programme broadcast last night, 13th August, on BBC4 – documentary 1 of a series of 3 entitled ‘Growing Children‘, which focused on Autism. In it, child psychologist Laverne Antrobus went on a quest to discover the different way that the brain works in children with autism and to explore the latest scientific research.
