December 11th 2012: the Scottish Parliament – Members’ Business: The Camphill Movement
Liberal Democrat MSP Alison McInnes led a debate on the the Camphill Movement which has supported children, young people and adults with learning disabilities, mental health issues and other support needs for more than 70 years.
The Camphill movement was founded in 1940 near Aberdeen and has now expanded to become a worldwide movement that boasts over 100 communities in more than 20 countries, including 12 in Scotland . Ms McInnes understands that the movement’s approach seeks to provide mutual support and nurture independence through living, learning and working together and said it was “a holistic model of care, support and education”. She believes that the movement’s success has been made possible by the dedication of staff, co-workers and volunteers and said “I hope they continue to flourish”.
Learning Minister Alasdair Allan said the debate was a valuable opportunity to mark the contribution and achievement of Camphill. Mr Allan said that Camphill Scotland engaged with national policy and legislative changes. He also said that the Scottish government was working on a new strategy document for people with learning disabilities.
