befriending scheme

Do you want to become a volunteer befriender?

We are seeking volunteers to support and provide peace of mind to elderly parents and relatives of people with learning disabilities. Volunteers will meet regularly with families and relatives, assisting and enabling them to lead happy and fulfilling lives. Befriending relationships are most effective when they last a long time and when frequent contact is made.

To be a befriender you need to:

  • Volunteer on a regular basis (there is an element of flexibility with this depending on your own schedule and the family’s needs)
  • Commit to the befriending a family and their relatives for at least 12 months
  • Be reliable and consistent
  • Be over 18 years old

    • Complete Rescare volunteer application form
    • Provide 2 references
    • Participate in an interview (most likely via Zoom)
    • Undertake enhanced Basic DBS check (*Rescare will fund this)


  • An online support group
  • Support from our helpline staff and trustees
  • Induction and ongoing training
  • Reimbursement of agreed reasonable expenses expenses.

Volunteers Wanted

  • Are you an empathic person?
  • Do you enjoy helping others?
  • Have you got good listening skills?
  • Can you give some of your time to a family in need?
  • Can you commit to volunteering for at least 12 months?

*To be eligible for this role we ask all our volunteers to apply for a basic DBS check which Rescare will fund
